Maiori - A Day at the Beach

April 24, 2012

Today we decided to just stay in Maiori and hang out at the beach.  The weather was a perfect 70 degrees, so a day at the beach seemed in order.

After another amazing breakfast, we headed down to the beach for a walk.  It was a bit early, so it was still cool out and the water was chilly too.  But the sun was shining, so we were all smiles.

We walked down to the harbor in search of a boat to take us off the coast to see it from a different point of view.  There is only one scheduled boat leaving from Maiori, and it had already left for the island of Capri.  We were told we could ask around for a private boat that might take us up the coast.  When we went down to the where the boats were, there were only a couple of fishermen fishing off the dock there, and no one to take us out in a boat.  Still, the harbor had its own charm and we ended up hanging around quite awhile…

After a nice time exploring Maiori, the kids were anxious for their “day at the beach”.  Funny, because we were the ONLY people there.  The water was cold, but after a few minutes, the numbness set in and it was bearable.  I waded along the shore most of the time picking up pieces of broken ceramics that had been worn smooth by the waves. I am hoping to bring them home and make something with them.

David never got in, but the kids spent the better part of the day playing in the water.  We went from the beach to the cement pier and ended up staying most of the day hanging out near these rocks.  There were tons of little fish near the rocks.  Attempts at underwater pictures however, failed miserably.

I went deeper in the water only once.  It was really cold, and I just couldn’t bring myself to get numb a second time.  Wading in up to my knees was enough to cool me off J

You can see by the pictures that we were the only ones on the beach, and I am sure people thought we were crazy, but it really was a lovely day for the beach!  The water here is so clear and such a beautiful color that it just makes you happy looking at it.

While the kids were playing in the water, David and I had a long time to chat.  We didn’t want to leave and we really wanted to see the coast from the water.  So, we decided to stay and extra night and take the 8:10 boat to Capri tomorrow.  I can’t wait J
