Today we went to a place we had been told about, but had not had the time to visit yet. It is called San Gimignano (Gym In Yon oh). You really have to hear David say it because it sounds so funny when he does. I have to admit that I wasn’t looking that forward to it because it is one of those super touristy places, and frankly, I am not into that so much…
However, I must say that I really enjoyed it! The town once boasted 72 towers, but only 14 are left. The towers are security towers, built by rich nobles in the 13 century as a way to protect what they had...and to show off what they had (in the way of money, of course). In San Gimignano it became a game of oneupmanship...whoever had the biggest tower wins.
We had lunch up in the piazza, and then strolled all the way through town.
Danika was particularly interested in the two torture museums… ugh…
Then we made our way to the very top and spectacular views.
The wisteria was in bloom here too… just amazing the fragrance in the air…
You can see from the pics that it was a very stormy day. Somehow we were watched over the entire day because it started pouring just AFTER we made it back to the car J
It rained most of the drive along the SR 222 this time (the very scenic road north of Sienna through the Tuscan wine country) but we still managed to get a few pictures.
Then it was a stop in Sienna for dinner in the Piazza…
Followed by gelato overlooking everything… just lovely.
The weather made for a great picture too… I think it is even better than most of the postcard pictures they are selling J
Again, we had dry weather until we got in the car, and then the rain began again as we headed back to Perugia.
A really enjoyable day J
