The Roman Road...

April 10, 2012

When Michelle and Susan were here, we really wanted to find the Roman Road near Cortona that Frances Mayes talked about in “Under the Tuscan Sun”.  So, we set off with the kids back to Cortona.  We parked the car in the same spot as last time.  This time, however, the weather was incredible.  It was cool enough to hike comfortably, and beautiful sunny skies surrounded us.

This was where we began…

We set off down this road…

About twenty minutes later, we found the Roman Road.  You can see the pavers Jason is standing on…

We followed them for about 40 minutes winding up through the hillside…

We stopped here for lunch because the views were incredible…

Lots of places for the kids to explore and get some exercise…

Danika loved all the different flowers…

And she liked the lizards too...

Jason and I found this great green beetle with a gold head…

Then it was back along the road…

That is our silver car parked at the bottom left, and if you look closely, you can see us in the reflection in the mirror…

This is looking back across the road to where we began our hike…

Then we drove around outside the city walls of Cortona.  The views were beautiful and I wanted to make sure I took these pictures for Susan because it was raining when she was here.  So, the following pictures of the church and necropolis are for Susan…

This picture is of the church that Francis Mayes talks about in her book.  It is the Dome of Santa Maria Nuova. She stopped one time because she saw five rainbows at the same time over this church.  She stayed until they disappeared.  Jason took this picture…

Then it was back to Perugia.  I have come to love the tunnels, and am fascinated when they go under people’s property, orchards, vineyards, etc.

I have also wanted to take a picture of Perugia as we come out of a tunnel and it pops into view.  It is comforting to see home again.

This was a spectacular day with the kids…
