Assisi

March 17, 2012

Assisi is only a half an hour away, so an easy trip with the kids.  We have been two times, and the first time it was really cold.  I combined the pictures so I could just do this in one post.

In  fact, it was so cold the first time that we stopped for hot chocolate and the special torte they make there.  The hot chocolate here is so thick that you can literally stand your spoon in it.  It it like a melted chocolate bar.  It was too much for Jason, but Danika loved it.  As for the pastry, luckily I noticed in time that it had pinenuts in it.  David is deathly allergic.  Bummer, I had to eat his too J

David found a friend...(or is this his brother?)

We went into Cathedral Santa Chiara and Danika and Jason each wanted to light a prayer candle under the large Crucifix.  They were fascinated by the story of St. Francis and how he was praying, back in 1206, under a crucifix (now in this church, but not the one pictured) and Jesus spoke to him telling him to "Go and rebuild my Church, which you can see has fallen into ruin."

The second time we went to Assisi, the weather was nice and sunny and we actually went to the Basilica di San Francesco (Basilica of St. Francis).  We went down to his tomb where he has four of his friends buried in the four corners of his tomb area.  There is a fifth just outside buried under the name of “Brother Jacopa".  It is actually a woman  whom he welcomed to his deathbed even though it was against the rules to have a woman there (ever the "rule" breaker).

After touring the church, we walked through the city and enjoyed the sites.

We were looking for, and finally found the fabulous shop that sells the best balsamic vinegar I have ever tasted.  A friend from college, Karen Koch, recommended it.  I went thinking, how good can balsamic vinegar really be???  Well, I am here to tell you that I have never tasted anything like this and it was incredible.  This is the guy that sells it… so nice J

As we were driving back to Perugia, I snapped this picture looking back at Assisi.

It is a great place to visit.  All four of us loved being there.
